Back to School
As the fall semester is getting started there is plenty to think about, especially if your kids are heading off to college!! However, many parents and students often do not consider the valuables they are packing up and bringing with them to the dorms. We suggest you make a quick inventory of all high value items your college student is preparing to take for the semester - such as sports equipment, laptops, electronics, furniture, jewelry, musical instruments, cameras, etc - along with an estimated value of each item.
Next, give us a quick call (858.452.2200) to find out what kind of coverage your current home or renters policy already has for items off your physical premise. Some policies will have limited coverage for items as long as your student is living in campus housing; if they are living off campus they may require their own renters policy. Also, some major credit cards will provide insurance for electronics or other high value items purchased with their card - give them a call to see what they offer and what requirements they may have.
Lastly, be sure to update your automobile insurance policy. Let us know if your student is taking the family car with them to school or if the car is going to be left at home. You may be eligible for a discount on your automobile policy if the usage is changing drastically, or if they have their own car they will need to be listed on the policy as well. Finally, many carriers offer discounted rates for students who maintain good grades!
Above all else, be sure to remind your college student touse common sense as they venture into the freedoms of campus life. Keep dorm rooms locked at all times and never leave laptops, backpacks, cameras or other valuables unattended at school to greatly reduce the risk of theft!
